Design Farm to Offer Free Schematic Design Services to Individuals, Non-profits, Small Businesses and Developers
Design Farm, an architecture firm located in Victor, Idaho and Jackson, Wyoming is launching an exciting competition titled “On the House”. We are inviting individuals, non-profits, small businesses, and developers to submit building projects for an opportunity to win FREE DESIGN SERVICES. Three lucky nominees will be chosen to work with a licensed architect to develop a complete schematic design package including preliminary floor plans, elevations, and 3D renderings of your project [custom designed specifically for you and your building site]. If you like what we design for your project, you can hire us to take it through the completion of the project. If you do not like what we put together for you, it is still on the house although we will retain the copyright.

Design Farm is a collective of architects, designers, and landscape architects dedicated to sustainable living implemented through design. Sustainable living encompasses every space we inhabit. From homes, offices, restaurants, schools, and hospitals, to emergency shelters in war torn or natural disaster areas. We believe good design can make life better. Our mission is to create spaces that are community-inspired, fun, professional, budget conscious, environmentally sensitive, sustainable, modern, and humane.

Collaboration is our design methodology. We believe the coordinated efforts among architects, clients, consultants, contractors, and community are integral to the success of every project. As architects and designers it is our duty to be facilitators and translators of clients’ ideas and values into the built form. We believe architecture has the power to represent the aspirations of its time and the specific nuances of each client’s vision while embodying a reverence for place. We encourage sustainable practices on all projects and are fluent in LEED certification. Our objective is not only sustainable design, but communities’ active involvement in the genesis of their own culture. With the homogenization of culture around the globe, it is becoming imperative that communities acknowledge and embrace their unique qualities through the architecture of the built environment.

The work of the firm spans all social classes and building typologies. We currently have projects ranging from school buildings in snowy Idaho, to homes on Kentucky bluegrass horse farms, to international aid projects for the rebuilding of post-earthquake Haiti. We are willing to accommodate any design budget, small or large. We live simply. We don’t drive fancy cars or own designer chairs. Our priority is the value added to our world by filling it with good design. We believe good design is a right, not a privilege.

What types of projects are we looking for?
All building types are welcome: tiny homes, traditional single family houses (100 sq. ft. to 10,000 sq. ft.), multi-family residential, restaurants, office buildings, schools, retail, etc. Projects of all budgets are encouraged to submit – we have experience on projects from $300 to $3,000,000. If you are unclear about the details of your project, do not worry. We will guide you through the process, although projects should not be submitted without realistic timelines and budgets.

Our mission for hosting the On The House competition:
According to national statistics architects are only involved in 10 % of all buildings and only 2-4% of houses. We would like to see these numbers increase. In an effort to change these startling statistics, we understand that we may need to prove ourselves to you before you can take a leap of faith. So we would like to give you a little teaser of what we were trained to do. We also want to make ourselves more approachable as architects and encourage people who have never thought they could afford to hire an architect to submit their project and let us take you through the exciting design process free of charge.

We could just sit around and design LEED Platinum Barbie Dream Houses for ourselves in order to enhance our companies portfolio, but that is a little bit too narcissistic for our style. We are lovers of humanity striving to build our own cultural capital. We would love to put our energy to good use and design something for you or your company. We strive to serve all social classes, as all are entitled to good design. Our goal is to create lifelong relationships and clients from this endeavor, so we know we have to get it right the first time.

What is this schematic design phase you keep speaking of?
Schematic Design is the initial and usually the most fun and exciting phase of project development. The design will be conceptual in character and based on the requirements of the program (all the spaces/rooms you want in your building). Please note that you will not be able to take the schematic drawings and construct a building with them as we provide them in this initial design phase. If you would like to continue with the design beyond the free schematic design package and potentially build our proposal, you will have to hire us by signing the appropriate architect/client contracts in order to have the rights to use our design. Please do not let this scare you away. As licensed architects we have to protect ourselves in our overly litigious country. Once we are officially hired as your architect to take the project beyond schematic design, we will work together to lead you through the remaining project phases: design revisions, material selections, meet building code regulations, obtain municipal approvals, conduct bidding with contractors, oversee construction, etc, and walk you into the front door of your new building. Sounds fantastic, does it not?

What can a schematic design package do for you?
Projects that have already been through the initial schematic design phase are more successful at attaining funding whether it be from a bank for a home-building construction loan, a capital campaign, or for general fundraising. Drawings and renderings provide potential investors with a tangible idea and a visual image of what you are proposing. We would like to take you through this first step on the house.

What’s the catch?
There really is no catch. We want to do meaningful work and be involved in our community. We want to touch people’s lives who may have never thought they had the finances to hire an architect. After all the nominations are received we are going to select three projects. We will then begin working with the clients to develop a program, review the site, and develop a conceptual design. If you like the design you can hire us to take it all the way through construction when the time is right, and the initial design services will still be free of charge. If you don’t like it, we will own the copyright and place it in a pile for a rainy day.
